I already take Glucosamine for my joint pain. Why should I include Chondroitin too?

By Professor Bob on April 29th, 2008

While Glucosamine helps rebuild joint cartilage, chondroitin is an important supplement because it is structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression, cushioning the joint.

Our body naturally produces glucosamine but as we get older and put wear and tear on the joints, glucosamine does not regenerate itself.

The National Institute of Health recently completed a Glucosamine Arthritis Intervention Trial that found Glucosamine and Chondroitin—at the same levels found in a single bottle of Elations—helped improve joint health for people with moderate-to-severe problems.

I’ve been hearing a lot about liquid vitamins and supplements. How do I know if they’re right for me?

By Professor Bob on April 29th, 2008

Liquid nutrition is more absorbable in the body therefore some people take liquid vitamins or supplements because they feel faster results versus the pill form. Liquid nutrition can be beneficial if:

  • You have age-related poor digestion or loss of appetite
  • Too busy to eat and don’t get enough fiber in your diet
  • You have difficulty swallowing pills
  • If you have undergone surgery or chemotherapy. Typically these treatments can diminish gastric function so liquid supplements are a better source for nutrition

Is it better to take vitamins in the morning or at night? And does it matter what kind of liquid I take them with? I usually take them with hot tea.

By Professor Bob on April 29th, 2008

You should take vitamins and minerals with meals when your digestion is most active and you can get maximum absorption. Vitamins and minerals that boost energy (ginseng, spirulina) are best in the morning and should be avoided before bedtime.

What you drink doesn’t really affect how your body absorbs the vitamins or supplements, just make sure you are getting a sufficient amount of fluids in your system to make sure the nutrients are digested properly and evenly distributed through your body.

I’d like to start incorporating more vitamins into my diet. I already take Calcium but know I need to include others. I just turned 40. What are some other vitamins or supplements that I should be taking?

By Professor Bob on April 29th, 2008

A multivitamin is the best way to incorporate a variety of necessary vitamins into your diet. Read the labels carefully and choose the one that includes an appropriate amount of milligrams to meet your health needs. Vitamin B-12 is important since our bodies absorb less of it as we get older. You can find B-12 in foods like whole grains, dark green vegetables and enriched foods. Vitamin D is another one to consider as it helps regulate the body and plays an important role in absorbing calcium in the body. It also promotes bone formation.

How can I relieve digestion discomfort?

By Professor Bob on April 29th, 2008

Many digestive problems can be prevented with lifestyle changes. Poor eating habits, such as eating too quickly or skipping meals, can result in digestive discomfort. Be sure to eat food slowly, chewing thoroughly.

In addition, eating a balanced diet can help you avoid digestive discomfort. Avoid eating too much processed food and sugar, and instead incorporate more fiber, fruits, and vegetables into your diet.

Listen to your body and be conscience of what certain foods make you feel uneasy. Try changing your diet based on those foods and see if you feel any difference. Consult your physician too for he or she may be able to run some blood tests to determine any food allergies.

Our Website typically collects two kinds of information about you: (a) information that you provide that personally identifies you; and (b) information that does not personally identify you, but that we automatically collect when you visit our Website or that you provide us.

(1) Personally Identifiable Information: Our definition of personally identifiable information includes any information that may be used to specifically identify or contact you, such as your name, mail address, phone number, etc. As a general policy, we do not automatically collect your personally identifiable information when you visit our Website. In certain circumstances, we may request, allow or otherwise provide you an opportunity to submit your personally identifiable information in connection with a feature, program, promotion or some other aspect of our Website. In the unfortunate event that your “personally identifiable information” (as the term or similar terms are defined by any applicable law requiring notice upon a security breach) is compromised, we may notify you by e-mail (at our sole and absolute discretion) to the last e-mail address you have provided us in the most expedient time reasonable under the circumstances; provided, however, delays in notification may occur while we take necessary measures to determine the scope of the breach and restore reasonable integrity to the system as well as for the legitimate needs of law enforcement if notification would impede a criminal investigation. From time to time we evaluate new technology for protecting information, and when appropriate, we upgrade our information security systems.

Joint Health

By Professor Bob on April 28th, 2008

Oh, the joys of aging! It seems like as soon as you hit 40 it becomes impossible to ignore the aches and pains that are part of every day. But by listening to your body and taking a few simple measures, you can greatly minimize the effect those aches and pains have on your life. It’s never too late to practice preventative care.

Arthritis is defined as “acute or chronic inflammation of a joint.” Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, the connective tissue that cushions the ends of bones within the joint. Its most common symptoms are pain, joint damage, and restricted motion. If you are one of the more than 27 million adults (a number that continues to rise) in the U.S. living with Osteoarthritis, you cannot afford to avoid the situation any longer.

What is the first thing you do when you feel aches and pains? Let me guess – you take a pill, usually probably an over-the-counter aspirin or ibuprofen. This is not a healthy habit, and by doing so you could potentially cause more long term damage. Don’t just deal with the pain. Manage it! Masking aches and pains with medication is not the same as taking steps to diminish it. There are ways to combat your pain, and a good place to start would be with an exercise program. Consult your doctor, a physical therapist, or other specially-trained professional, who can show you range-of-motion and strengthening exercises that are good for arthritis.

Another cause for increased joint pain is that, as you age, your body produces less of the cartilage-restoring nutrients Glucosamine and Chondroitin. In fact, a recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health concluded that the proper combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin provided statistically-significant relief in treating moderate-to-severe knee pain. Be sure you are getting the right amount of Glucosamine (1,500 mg) and Chondroitin (1,200 mg) – if you can take the supplements in liquid form, do that. It will be more absorbable and effective.

To summarize, taking the preventative steps below can help you take charge of your joint health:
• Pay attention to what your body is telling you.
• Manage the pain, don’t just deal with it.
• Exercise to help improve joint flexibility and protect your joints.
• Take daily the right amount of liquid Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

Now, go ahead and continue doing the things in life that truly make you happy – Live Elated!

My grandkids keep me young at heart and remind me to not take things too seriously

By Live Elated Staff on April 28th, 2008

Any moment I can spend with my grandkids is an “elated” moment. They are growing up so fast and I don’t want to miss a thing so I take lots of photographs (one of my hobbies). My grandkids keep me young at heart and remind me to not take things too seriously.
